Anthropogenic Global Waming Story #1 – IPCC
Posted by Jeff Id on August 21, 2008
Ok, this will take a bit. I think each section should be short but make its points. This is a difficult topic and I did research it for a long time without preconceived conclusions.
The IPCC is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is prime driver in world climate change policy see the definition of their history and mission here.
The reason for the founding of the IPCC is defined in an excerpt from the above link.
IPCC History and Mission
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in 1988 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organization for the purpose of assessing “the scientific, technical and socioeconomic information relevant for the understanding of the risk of human-induced climate change. It does not carry out new research nor does it monitor climate-related data. It bases its assessment mainly on published and peer reviewed scientific technical literature.” [1] The goal of these assessments is to inform international policy and negotiations on climate-related issues.
It is important to note that human induced climate change had not been determined in 1988. Although some were already stating it to be fact there was no claimed “Consensus” at this point. It is clear though that the IPCC must find man caused climate change to survive as a political entity.
The first thing they did is below (again from the above link)
The First Three Assessments
The First Assessment Report (FAR) of the IPCC (1990), as well as a supplemental report prepared in 1992, supported the establishment of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, commonly known as “The Earth Summit”) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The UNFCCC treaty, which the United States has signed, serves as the foundation of international political efforts to combat global warming.
So now we have established three new organizations who’s survival depends on establishing man made global warming. Whether they are correct or not they can only come to one conclusion or they will need new jobs. These are the guys who pushed the Kyoto treaty.
How do they choose papers to support their points?
Authors, Contributors, and Reviewers
The technical support units, co-chairs, and bureaus of each working group together assemble a list of proposed authors for its assessment, but the lead authors are selected by the entire working group. Governments and non-governmental organizations around the world are invited to nominate potential authors.
A government nomination does not imply that the scientist’s views are endorsed by that government, or that the scientist is expected to represent his or her government’s view. It may mean that a government has provided a scientist with financial support, but many scientists receive no financial support at all and others are merely reimbursed for travel expenses. Experts from developing nations who have received no financial support from their government are supported through the IPCC trust fund.
So the government panel who’s survival depends on AGW (man made global warming) appoints scientists in a panel fashion. It may mean that the government has provided financial support or only travel expenses. It is no small fact that they also provide a global stage for the scientist to speak.
I have to state the obvious here, this is the perfect structure for a corrupt system and it needs to be considered with the same skepticism that a Climatologist working for Exxon would. If you are a climatologist who else will pay your salary besides government or a company the government is trying to close down? – It’s a good question I think.
So the situation for a Climatologist is pretty dire if he or she doesn’t fall in line with the IPCC. I am just guessing but I bet those who disagree mostly focus their research on anything but man made global warming.
Come back for part 2 – “Peer review”

I think this is an excellent summary of how corruption is encouraged (almost mandated) in any “scientific investigation” supported by government. I would like to refer to this on my blog and my web-site.

Thanks for the compliments. Feel free to link or copy anything from my blog.
I only request to be referenced as a resource. I am going to add something about that to my main page.
