Arctic Ice has Actually Grown? All the Data Agrees?

Posted by Jeff Id on August 31, 2008

The arctic ice hasn’t grown, how is it possible? You would have to be an idiot to believe that. We have been reading everywhere in the headlines that the arctic ice is disappearing. Headlines like this from the first page of a google news search-

Arctic ice melting and not coming back: scientist

Melting Arctic Ice Imperils Polar Bears

Arctic Ice On Verge Of Another All-time Low

Meltdown in the Arctic: Polar icecap shrinking at an alarming rate

North Pole ice cap melting faster than ever

Melting polar ice hits ‘tipping point,’ nears record loss

How can this be true? Here is the data directly from the scientists reporting the melting.

The red line in the graph above indicates where we are this year, the yellow line indicates where we were last year and the forecast indicates what the “Experts” predicted. Note, there is more ice this year than last. How can we be at the tipping point as many headlines and scientists claim??????

Here is a graph of all time arctic temperatures taken from Watts Up With that HERE. It shows the entire HISTORY of arctic ice measurement. So the longest in HISTORY isn’t too big a deal is it. You can clearly see the ice has GROWN from last year. You can also see that most of the sea ice melts every year.

The ice level has clearly shown a shrinking trend over this very short time period but in 2008 due to a significant and widely unreported drop in global temperature, the ice boldly decided to increase against the wishes and predictions of the IPCC AGW guys. Not to be deterred by facts the press reported the headlines above.

Personal disclaimer: This does not prove Antropogenic global warming is false but it does demonstrate that the reporting and (if you read the articles the science) are highly biased toward AGW.

You can’t trust what you read in the news even if every drive by media outlet reports the same thing.

Here is another interesting excerpt from Watts Up With That

We know from official US Weather Bureau records that it was possible to sail as far as 81N latitude in ice-free water, during a similar warm period in 1922. That is about as close to the pole as you can sail now. Temperatures around Spitzbergen, Norway warmed a remarkable 12C during a few years prior to 1922. From the November, 1922 Weather Bureau report – “He says that he first noted wanner conditions in 1915, that since that time it has steadily gotten warmer, and that to-day the Arctic of that region is not recognizable as the same region of 1865 to 1917.

So, while we don’t have ice extent measurements from 1922, we do know that the ice had receded by a similar amount. It just begs the question -

Is this still evidence of global warming or is it just another cycle we don’t understand?

Ha! Yet people should believe what an anonymous Christian fundamentalist blogger has to say about science? God help us!

The media gets their information from the same source in many cases like reuters, or the associated press. The result is often mass misrepresentation of the facts. This was a perfect instance of that where the people who picked up on the initial report, didn’t bother to look at the data or had an agenda.

The rest actually subscribe to reuters or associated press and repeat the story following along like puppies. See my article about Drive by Media at the link below.

I assure you Dave, I am no Christian fundamentalist.

You do know that at the present moment, the Arctic ice melt is the 2nd lowest on record, exceeding the previous low of 2005?

Given that there are several more weeks of melting in the Arctic, this year’s melt might equal or exceed last years.

That’s the facts, man. You can verify it easy enough by visiting the websites of the scientists.

Dave, look up man. The graph shows the minimum in 2007. Its the first and second graph above. If you can’t read a graph you are in the wrong forum. Since we grew from last year, it’s pretty hard to state its a tipping point. It’s no fun to argue with someone who refuses to read.

You’re an idiot who can’t read a trend line. When the two lowest years of ice cover on record happen two years in a row and that reinforces a declining trend line in ice cover that isn’t something to call “growth.”

All I see here is a record of ice that extends a grand total of 30 years. How can that possibly mean anything substantial at this point? When I look to see a “trend” as short as this, what I do see is a series of lines that cyclically go up and down.

There is plenty of observational data, that is simply not part of the “record” above, as well as anecdotes, that indicate that the Arctic has gone thru periods as “severe” as that noted above.

There are more factors involved in this than simple warming of the atmosphere. The ocean is far less dynamic in it’s temperature fluctuations, particularly in higher latitudes, but the oscillations of both the Pacific and Atlantic, and the effect they have on polar ice are at best superficially understood. NSDIC reported that breakup of ice last year was accelerated due, to quite a significant degree, winds from Siberia.

My issue is this. Some of you have staked out a position that is so fundamentalist, that if change doesn’t occur the way you wish it to – then what? Open to changing your mind, or are you so immersed in being your position that you fall with it? And the mockery? Discourse should be conducted free of such personal attacks – otherwise this devolves below the level of even base argument and resolves only that one person feels the need to attack.

    well.

they get all their news from alex jones et al.

they have a pretty big group of selves.

    whoever they are.

    i snapped out of it.

it’s not a matter of “looking at the facts,” because that’s the nature of “infowars.” they’re “facts” now. look at assumptions.

    how about this.

go to your local university, find the environmental science department, and state your claims if you don’t think climate change is anthropogenic.

you will be in for a wild ride.

don’t interrupt the person who spends every waking moment of their working life researching with real data, real math, with real publications (which carry assumptions too, but don’t assume that all ES publications are run by the freaking bilderberg group, or toss all information aside as hegenomy or some simplistic nonsense)

    then come back

    then articulate yourself.

otherwise you guys are just regurgitating some bullshit you found on search engines.

hard science is not all that accessible to the public.

this is one of scientists’ biggest concerns.

how to tell people what’s going on without blowing shit out of proportion.

    because we’re like wolves.

    anyway.

read more. not more alex jones & whatever, just MORE. expand your readings.

    ugh.

It stands to reason that our planet is going to get warmer. Scientists have already stated that the sun is growing and will eventually swallow the earth up.

I’d love to find the stats that I had found on NASA’s website several years ago. They showed graphs of the polar cap measurements over many years. What I noticed was that there were really low years, but there were also really high years in between.
