How to reply?

Posted by Jeff Id on April 26, 2011

I received this email today, not sure how to reply.  Any suggestions?

Hi Jeff,

I wanted to email you in regards in any possible advertising opportunities you may have with your website…I am looking to promote the C40 Cities project (Climate Leadership Group) and the work that they and their partner the Clinton Climate Initiative (Bill Clinton and Doug Band) have done to tackle the issue of climate change and global warming. Here’s their website : www.c40cities.org   ..their goal is to increase energy efficiency in large cities across the world.

Let me know if you’d be interested in working together, I look forward to hearing back from you.

UPDATE:

Taking Lucia’s and others suggestions:

Hi Kori,

It sounds like an interesting opportunity.  What do you have in mind.

Jeff

You could take their money and stick their banner on your site, under a heading like, “Views From the Other Side.”

The you could claim that Big Green is funding your skepticism, in an effort to be fair and balanced.

  2. Congratulations!

It sounds to me like an invitation to join the worldwide alliance that is pushing the story of CO2-induced global warming.

In your reply, you might ask if their advertisements would preclude you from posting evidence on both sides, e.g., today’s news story by Dr. David Whitehouse:

“Is It The Sun Wot Done It?”

    http://thegwpf.org/the-observatory/2864-is-it-the-sun-wot-done-it.html

Hang in there, Jeff. Your stock is definitely moving up!

  3. You might also ask to share the profits with Bill Clinton and Doug Band (and their silent partner, Al).

Rejecting to work with them would be nasty, I think you should work with them exposing you POV about the costs and benefits that those cities took in order to achieve the honor to be on that list.
If then they reject your colaboration it will be clear that this invitation was some sort of a “mistake” and not an effort to be fair and balanced.

    Well Jeff,
Before I commented I did visit the web site, C40 Cities.
In many ways Jeff, it reminds me and likely others, of the United Nations, many similar programs they are pursuing, so is it a duplication?
Open minded we must all be, but so many of their key objective are exactly what many are now questioning. Their main thrust is government authorities’, these are the very ones, in so many cases initiating dubious changes, at the public expense of course, then instigating policies that are now crippling the finances of many countries!
    Regards,
    Graham.

I don’t know what to charge, but someone isn’t paying attention.

I really am having a hard time quitting blogging, but I doubt that McIntyre has to put up with much of this kind of stuff.

Maybe the best response would be:

    BWAAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAAAA….

Or do you think they were actually serious?

    Tom,

Grist still sends requests for contributions to their fodder feeder. I’m certain that this individual was serious.

Brian H has it right. Don’t devalue the personal effort you have put into your success. Charge for it. Geoff.

This seems to me to be a win-win for you. I’d accept the invitation and then start documenting every single thing for everyone to see. Make them address your questions. Make them defend their positions. Make them defend Climategate.

  13. Jeff,

It appears to me that you are being invited to join one of the most talented groups of public opinion molders.

From my biased perspective they are skilled sales persons, who could sell “refrigerators to Eskimos,” i.e., propaganda artists.

If you have confidence in yourself (and you show evidence of that, in my opinion), you may be able to help the cause (restore integrity to and faith in government science) more inside their camp than outside of it.

If I were in your place I would discuss this matter privately with my closest advisors and then spend some time alone meditating on the matter. – OM

From the from page of the C40 web site:

C40 Basel Workshop on Sustainable Infrastructure Financing: Global Energy Basel

    11-12 January 2011

This event will bring together leaders …

Doesn’t seem like they’re keeping up with the times to me (or even the calendar).

Steve McIntyre doesn’t have ads on his site. Anthony Watts seems to run what he likes, though I do seem to remember encountering the odd unexpected ad just above the comments. You could always recall the motto of The Register – “Biting the hand that feeds IT” – and come up with your own slant. Blogging is a relatively harmless means of dissipating excess heat, which could otherwise have an adverse effect on the household, as long as you don’t actually initiate a chilling effect.

I would tell him to stop wasting CO2 on such frivolous nonsense and prove to them that they are actually creating more CO2 than sequestering. Crap, I just went over my carbon footprint quota for the week with this email, now what?

    WhyNot;
excellent! Maximize your CO2 output and buttprint. The flora of the planet have driven it down to starvation levels; we fauna have to pick up our game. Let’s target 2,000 ppm!

It would be nice for showing you’re not sponsored by big oil.
