What would you do

I worked for several hours on gridded temps again this weekend.  In the meantime ..hours of thought went into this………. What would you do with a little global warming.

If I had some global warming, I’d …..

Canoe to the north pole?

Buy carbon credits?

By stock in speedo!

  1. Plant more peach trees.

Warmer means longer growing season, more rain, less frost damage, more biological productivity, bumper crops, greening of deserts, the end of famines, expansion of wildlife ranges, reduced winter fuel demands, delay of the next Ice Age, more economic potential, greater happiness and good cheer.

I’m all for it. Warmer Is Better. If we are not warming the planet already, we should find some good ways to do so.

  2. I would short beach-front property now. After all, there should be much more beach in the warm future and much more nice weather to enjoy it in.

  3. I’d be able to hunt ducks past October 1. As it is now the ponds near Anchorage freeze up about then.

With IPCC-predicted warming I might even be able ot grow tomatos.

  4. I’d use it to forestall the coming cooling. Drill, baby, drill. Scoop, baby, scoop. Burn, baby, burn.

  5. We would not need as much fossil fuel, if the climate warmed up. Air conditioning is a luxury we can do without; heating is a necessity. So warming would help solve the CO2-caused warming problem!

  6. I spent fourteen years living in the Asian Tropics where the summer-time heat would render the fat off your body and you would be convinced you were melting into the side walk. In Manila and Hong Kong they just ramped up the production of San Miguel. Catastrophe.

  7. RE: #8 Jae

Who said AC was a luxury one can do without??? There’s a reason that Hell is most ofter depicted as being insufferably hot. Don’t be messin’ with the AC!!!

  8. I would plan on going to the Wings opening home playoff game in shorts and a t-shirt… to watch them lose. 😉

  9. #8 At 40C, you open the windows and let the mosquitoes in.
Then you get malaria and you feel very cold.

  10. 14: “#8 At 40C, you open the windows and let the mosquitoes in.
Then you get malaria and you feel very cold.”

That kind of heat only occurs in deserts. Does malaria exist in deserts?

  11. 18-Well of course it exists in deserts-take someone infected to a desert and bingo, you’ve got malaria in the desert. But mosquitoes need standing water for breeding, so malaria wouldn’t spread in a desert as long as it’s dry.

  12. You can’t have “a little global warming.” You either have global warming, or you…don’t. Global warming isn’t something you can pick up at the market.

  13. I would add a little global warming to the list of many equally valid reasons to undergo an energy transformation. Events in the past year provide an opportunity to demonstrate that of all the reasons to stop burning carbon, climate is the least desirable one on which to base policy or measure its success.

About a year and a half ago, I started organizing a replacing fossil fuel club in Chicago. We think the greatest impediment to alternatives is the high cost of installation vs the time of payback; the club is a way to exert downward pressure on prices.
Almost everybody I talk to thinks it’s a great idea.

I was surprised to find that most were interested for reasons other than climate. In fact, some of the most ardent supporters were what some called deniers.

We live in interesting times. Enough technology exists to begin the leap to wholly new energy sources and uses. This is something many of us have dreamed about since childhood.

  14. Have a better tan
    Use less power in winter
Plant nice tropical plants in my garden
Spend more time in the mountains and carry a lighter sleeping bag

  15. ” Enough technology exists to begin the leap to wholly new energy sources and uses.” — Ridiculous. That’s the problem. There is not any working technology to leap to and people who claim knowledge and say otherwise, are ignorant or have ulterior motives. Every time.

If I had some global warming, I’d move 1 degree latitude north and live the same way I did.

  16. “If I had some global warming, Id ..” …not worry, fret, or concern myself about it. There are much more important problems we face as a society…

Yes. Sénégal among others. Not quite a desert.

I remember my “Alternative Energy” course I took as an undergraduate in mechanical engineering at Clemson University. If you look at the textbook we used back then, you’d find that nothing has really changed much in wind, solar, biofuel, and other “alternative” energy technologies. We do have new materials and computer controls, but wind is wind, solar is solar (by the way, how long has NREL been around?). Nuclear (arguably the greenest energy technology) is dead because of opposition by environmentalists. Fusion is still way, way off in the future. Even hydroelectric projects are being thwarted because of environmental impact concerns.

So where does that leave us? What sources will we use to power our schools, hospitals, homes, places of work? What energy sources will we use to farm the land, deliver our goods, clear the snow in the winter, power the fire trucks and police cars, transport people across the country?

I think we should have an alternative energy source day every year where all portions of the electrical grid powered by fossil fuels and nuclear should be shut down, all gas stations closed, and no fossil fuel powered vehicles or equipment of any kind can be used. And people who got mad because of the hardship and inconvenience could be directed to the home of the nearest environmentalist/CAGW advocate…

  19. Rephrase: sufficient technologies exist to begin a 50 year process; solar thermal, photo voltaic, ground temperature assisted HVAC, passive design and advancing efficiencies in buildings, cars and appliances to name a few. It’s not a question of if, but how.

Whatever the merits of climate science, climate and CO2 are poor bases for policy. Climate policy demands large scale and unacceptably slow or nonexistent government actions. The climate based premise of raising the cost of carbon to force consumers onto alternatives is flawed. Such a policy results only in both being unaffordable.

  20. 27: “(by the way, how long has NREL been around?).”

About 38 years, if I recall correctly. I am a carbohydrate chemist, and I applied for a chemistry position there in about 1973. The job involved developing an ECONOMICAL method of making ethanol from cellulosic materials. I didn’t get the job for some reason. Anyway, after 37 years, not much has been actual progress has been made in this area (lotsa hype, but nothing commercial, AFIK). Last I knew, 11 companies are planning to build plants, but I don’t know if any are yet beyond the “pilot” stage, and I really doubt that they will “pencil out” without my help (gov’ment subsidy).

I haven’t kept up on this for several years, so maybe the situation has improved.

  21. Up to 4C: nothing at all. Weather here in the UK will just get nicer and my heating bills will fall. I don’t have AC so not an issue.
More than 4C: sell beach home in Portugal and buy one in Scotland.
Sadly not even the railway engineer thinks it will warm up that much in my remaining lifetime.

  22. If I had a little global warming I would…

exaggerate it into a crisis of biblical proportions and use it as a pretext to impose my unaccountable socialist world order. Bwa ha ha ha ha ha!

And if that failed, I would just use it to guilt some extra cash out of gullible Western liberals and go back to ruling my little dictatorship with an iron fist 🙂
